Random Acts Of Kindness
Our Lady of the Gulf church in Bay St. Louis, Ms. sits high on a bluff overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. Not high enough, apparently. Katrina put 4-6 feet of water in the church. I visited on September 9 and found all of the pews skewed in front of the alter and the wood floor fallen apart. The roof was blown away and all of the frescos on the ceiling were in danger of being destroyed.
Through the help of volunteers and a church in Alabama, the roof has been sealed and the floor removed. They had their first service in the church on Christmas Eve. A path of plywood led worshipers to a platform where folding chairs were arranged. You can still look through most of the flooring at the ground.
Father Tracy, the pastor, is living in a small camper next to the church. Another camper houses church records.
If you are looking for a way to assist a victim of the storm without donating to a black hole such as the Red Cross, the Salvation Army or Catholic Charities, consider sending a donation or show up and help Father Tracy and his parishioners. Follow this link for Our Lady of the Gulf.
