Emergency Care - Bleeding
Parrots have a very low blood clotting factor. As a result, even a relatively small cut can cause major, prolonged blood loss. Such things as broken blood feathers, a lost toenail or a broken beak can turn into major problems.
A few things you should know...
Treat a bleeding bird as you would a bleeding human. Wash the wound if necessary. Always have a container of styptic powder available (we use Quickstop, available at all major pharmacies). If you don't have styptic powder try flour or baby powder. If the powder doesn't immediately stop the bleeding, apply pressure to the wound. If a blood feather breaks, squeeze the tip of the feather until bleeding stops or pull the remaining feather shaft out. It may be painful but it will stop the bleeding.
If bleeding persists, take your bird to a vet or an emergency veterinary clinic. Don't leave the bird unattended thinking the bleeding will stop. It may but it could also cause the death of your pet.
