Nobody's Home
If you want to do something nice for the people of New Orleans you have to find them. Most of them are in Houston, or Atlanta or Little Rock. Janis Gore is collecting coats for winter and delivering them to Slidell. Ask around your town. Call the Red Cross and find out if there are evacuees in your city. Plan a Thanksgiving dinner for them or organize a toy drive for Christmas. Most of them won't be home for six months to a year. They may not need money or material things but they all need to feel that somebody cares. Find an evacuee and let them tell you their story...then give them a hug. It will be something they remember forever.
