Category 5
New Orleans has been preparing for the "big one" since 1965 when Hurricane Betsy came in as a category 3 hurricane and reeked havoc, all but destroying the eastern half of the city. This morning, Hurricane Katrina was upgraded to a category 5 storm with sustained winds of 165 and gusts to 190 mph.
The most powerful hurricane in recorded history hit the Florida Keys in 1935 with a central pressure of 892, the second most powerful was Camille at 909. Hurricane Katrina is 30 hours away and has a pressure of 908 and is expected to intensify as it hits warmer waters near the coast.
We wish all of our friends safe passage.
