Parrot Illnesses
Unlike dog shows and cat shows, bird shows have little or no control over the health of the birds being sold. No health certificate is required and birds are rarely inspected before a show by an avian certified veterinarian. It has been the practice of domestic parrot breeders and bird show sponsors to downplay any mention of diseases in parrots. The subject has been treated with a "don't ask, don't tell" attitude.
Since most avian diseases are transmitted by airborne virus or bacteria, anyone who visits a bird show that contains a sick bird may bring that sickness home to their pet birds. While we encourage our customers to attend bird shows we caution them about proper procedures after they attend a show. This includes washing the clothes they wore to the show and showering before they handle their pet birds.
A noted local veterinarian credits bird shows with the creation of widespread Polyomia virus outbreaks in the past. Other diseases that can be transmitted include Proventricular Dilitation Disease (PDD), Beak and Feather Disease (BFD), Psittacosis (Chlamydia psittaci) and Salmonella.
During the course of 2005 we will be publishing a series of posts detailing these various illnesses in birds. Why? Because we want to know and, if we're going to research the subject, we thought we would share it with you.
