Congo Time
This week we get six Congo African Grey babies inside from the nest. Two more will come in a couple of weeks. It's a small group compared to previous years when we have had as many as 19.
All Congos lay a clutch of eggs in February. As many as fifty percent will "double clutch" by laying again in May or June. Some breeders will force their birds to lay several clutches a season by pulling eggs as soon as they are laid. These birds will produce three or four clutches in season. We choose not to follow this practice.
It takes a lot out of a female to produce a clutch of eggs. We feel that if females are induced to lay multiple clutches it will shorten their breeding life and physically affect the bird. Breeders who practice this method are more concerned about profit than the well-being of their breeding pairs.
