Shragie's Great Adventure
I found a blog entry by accident at Blog O'Matters that describes a person's first encounter with a large parrot. It reminded me of what Shragie will experience on Sunday when Mac and Jake arrive in New York City.
Parrots tend to like stability in their lives and develop a bond with the person and family they are with. When Mac and Jake arrived at our house a couple of weeks ago they were very nervous and frightened by their new surroundings and tried to defend themselves whenever they felt threatened (which was often). Jake "cracked" first, he is just a pushover for a kiss and a hug.
Mac will give kisses if you talk to him softly and loves to step up on your arm and be held close to your chest. But he won't let you touch him, yet. If I had to pick one, Mac would be the one. There is so much gratification in taking a bird that is frightened and winning his heart.
And Mac is nervous and frightened. He is not mean, just defensive. Both of himself and of Jake. I hope that for every minute Shragie spends loving Jake, he will spend two minutes with Mac getting to know him.
