In Search Of...The Perfect Aviary
The Aviary - Norman Rockwell
You would think that after years of planning and the purchase of our 25 acres we would have a design for the perfect aviary. Nope.
Cages in a building? Add full spectrum lighting, sprinkler system, heating and ventilation. Frequent cleaning and maintenance. Noisy, may inhibit breeding. Quality of life for the birds would not be much in a chicken farm environment.
A perfect aviary would be outside so the birds can get sun and rain. Large enough for flight. Shade for the nestbox. Cover for the food. Protection from predators. Protection from cold weather. Double enclosures to prevent escape. Easy to keep clean.
All of this on a reasonable budget.
We're working on it. We've cleared half an acre of all underbrush and dead trees. All the while we are considering and adapting various concepts used by breeders in the area.
More clearing today...I'm sure we'll write many posts as we progress.
